Summary: key race calls so far

With polls closed on the east coast, we’ve seen a number of races called already. Here are the top lines we’re following:

  • Chris Pappas, the four-term Democratic congressman, has won New Hampshire’s US Senate race, protecting the open seat from a Republican flip in a closely fought contest against John Sununu, the former senator.

  • Democrat Debbie Wasserman Schultz won re-election in Florida’s 20th congressional district, securing a 12th term. She beat her Republican challenger, Brent Andersen.

  • Democrat Kathy Castor, who has served for 10 terms, won re-election in Florida’s 14th congressional district, which was re-drawn this year to boost Republicans.

  • Democratic congressman Jared Moskowitz also won re-election in the redrawn 25th congressional district in Florida, beating out his Republican challenger Scott Singer.

Polls closed in Ohio an hour and a half ago, and long lines of people have filed into the Hilton hotel in downtown Columbus to watch results roll in at the Ohio Democrats’ election night watch party. The crowd cheered when large screens flashed the news that Democrat John Ossoff won Georgia’s Senate race and booed when they learned that Republican Ashley Moody won the Florida Senate race.

The atmosphere is joyful. Every 10 minutes, the audience chants, “Amy! Amy! Amy”, in hopes that the Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton wins the Ohio race.

Heather Hogrefe, 58, told me she drove two hours from Perrysburg in north-west Ohio. “Ohio is so corrupt and it has been a one party state for too long,” said Hogrefe. “It’s time for that to end.”

Hogrefe, a teacher who works with at-risk high school students, launched a fundraiser with her friends to support Acton and raised $20,000. “We made it our new year’s resolution to get her elected,” she said. Hogrefe said she rejects how Ohio Republicans have expanded the state’s school voucher program but haven’t adequately funded public schools. A victory for the Democratic Senate candidate Sherrod Brown would mean new possibilities for disadvantaged students, Hogrefe said.

“If we can fight for Ohio and win, it means that we can do that in the rest of the country,” said Brandy Alexander, 53, a friend who drove to the event with Hogrefe. “We used to be purple, almost blue, but then Trump came to power. What happens here represents what we can do in the rest of America.”

Over glasses of red wine, the women cheered, as the DJ played hits from Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Bill Withers and Alicia Keys. “We’re feeling hopeful tonight,” Hogrefe said.
