‘I loved that’ Trump says after protester was allegedly punched by president’s supporter

Tensions flared on Wednesday, as multiple protesters were removed from the Trump rally at South Carolina’s Clemson University.

One demonstrator apparently was socked by a rally attendee, much to Trump’s delight.

“That was great, man. Wow. Man, I loved that,” the president said.

“Who’s the guy that threw the punch?” he continued. “You know, you reminded me of Evander. The real deal Holyfield,” referring to the former heavyweight champion.

“You gotta give them credit. It takes courage to do that.”

Key events

Summary

We’re wrapping up our live coverage of US politics. Here are some of today’s key developments:

  • Donald Trump rallied in South Carolina for Republican Senator Darline Graham. The event at Clemson University was marked by tension and aggression toward protesters, which Trump praised. Several demonstrators were removed and in at least two instances Trump supporters allegedly physically attacked them. “That was great, man. Wow. Man, I loved that,” the president said after an attendee punched a protester.

  • Nancy Pelosi’s office received “a suspicious letter” on Wednesday in what appears to be the latest incident of ill-intentioned mailings targeted at US Congress members before the midterm elections. The offices of more than three dozen members of Congress across the political spectrum recently received envelopes containing white powder. The FBI, the Capitol police and the US Postal Inspection Service are investigating the mailings.

  • The controversy around Vivek Ramaswamy’s campaign ad continued to grow as it emerged that another Republican candidate in Ohio had asked him not to run the spot featuring his Democratic opponent’s estranged mother. JD Vance said he was “disgusted” by Republican outrage over the ad, adding that they should “stop whining about an advertisement and go win the race in 13 days”. Amy Acton, whose mother was in the ad, told a group of voters her mother was not well and Ramaswamy shouldn’t have “exploited her”.

  • Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar denied allegations of immigration fraud in a Wednesday appearance on MS Now, her first interview since federal agents raided her residence last week.

  • Aipac, the most powerful pro-Israel lobby in the US, will cease issuing endorsements and directly contributing to candidates through its political action committee, according to a report from Jewish Insider.

  • Democrats are suing to stop Donald Trump’s administration from demanding states remove voters, who the federal government alleges are not citizens, from their rolls ahead of the US midterms.
